The Foundations: Stances, Walking, and Building Power
Introduction
Everyone wants to learn the 540-degree spinning kick. But no one wants to practice walking. This is a mistake. A building is only as strong as its foundation. In Taekwondo, that foundation is your Stance.
The Walking Stance (Gunnun Sogi)
This is the most common “transitional” stance. It resembles a natural walking step. It allows you to move forward or backward rapidly. It is the stance of movement.
The Front Stance (Ap Sogi)
This is the stance of power.
- Structure: Long step. Front knee bent deeply; back leg straight.
- Purpose: This stance lowers your center of gravity, creating “Roots.” When you throw a punch from a Front Stance, you are pushing off the ground. The ground pushes back (Newton’s Law). This creates a massive amount of power.
The Back Stance (Dwit Sogi)
- Structure: Feet at a 90-degree angle, 70% of your weight on the back leg.
- Purpose: This is a defensive stance. It allows you to evade attacks and easily shift weight to the front leg for a quick counter-kick.
Building External Force (Power)
In physics, Force = Mass x Acceleration.
- Mass: Your body weight.
- Acceleration: How fast you move.
To build “External Force” (the power to break boards or knock out opponents), you must combine mass with speed.
- Hip Rotation: If you don’t rotate your hips, you are just using your arm or leg (low mass). If you rotate your hips into the target, you transfer your whole body weight into the strike (high mass).
- Rechamber: For kicks, a quick “snap” back to the starting position creates acceleration. The faster the snap, the more impact.
Drill: Walking Punch
- Take a Front Stance.
- Walk forward with a punch.
- Focus on pushing off the rear foot with every step. Feel the power come from the floor, travel up your leg, rotate through your hips, and explode out the fist.
| TAKEAWAY Master the boring stuff. When you master walking, you master balance. When you master balance, you master power. When you master power, you control the fight. |
