The Art of the Hand: Strikes by Punches
Introduction
In a sport dominated by flashy spin kicks, the humble punch is often overlooked. However, the hands are the fastest weapons in your arsenal. A well-timed punch can break an opponent’s rhythm, set up a devastating kick, or score a crucial point.
The Fundamentals
- Jab (Front Hand): Your range finder. Fast, snappy, and used to measure distance.
- Cross (Rear Hand): Your power punch. Twisting your hips and pivoting your rear foot generates massive force.
- Hook: Used for close-quarters combat.
- Uppercut: Effective when an opponent is leaning forward.
The Taekwondo Specifics
Beyond standard boxing, TKD utilizes the Backfist (a whipping strike with the top of the fist) and the Ridgehand (striking with the hand opposite the thumb). These are typically quicker and use a snapping motion rather than a push.
The Setup (The “Head-Kick” Bait)
The greatest use of punches in Taekwondo is as a distraction.
- Throw a fast Jab to obscure their vision (cover their eyes).
- They raise their hands to block the face.
- You drop the punch and throw a roundhouse kick to the exposed body or head.
This is known as the “Punch-Kick” combination.
Power Generation
A punch does not come from the arm; it comes from the legs. When throwing a cross, push off the back foot, rotate your hips forward, and snap your shoulder. The fist is just the delivery vehicle.
| TAKEAWAY Don’t neglect your hands. They are the “setup kings” of Taekwondo. Train them with the same dedication as your kicks, and your overall game will become 100% more dangerous. |
